A Prediction on where CEP is heading.
May 18th, 2010
After listening for two days on incrediblty smart people, here’s what I think (at least at the moment) will happen with event processing in, say, 5-10 years…
Elements from sensor fusion, machine learning and other areas will creep into event processing and will start to get more and more specialized event processing solutions.
Most interesting problems in event processing will require that you can do things like "find all event patterns that deviate from the norm" from the inbound streams. That sort off implies that you need to elements from other fields.
The good news is that this will be rather easy, just take existing stuff and adjust it to the event processing context. No need to do re-invent things here…
I’m seeing a lot more press about CEP lately, especially regarding financial services and telecoms applications. And the recent acquisition by Sybase of Aleri followed by the acquistion of Sybase by SAP makes it all a lot more interesting. Sybase is doing some really interesting stuff in terms of making a more usable system too, particularly as evidenced by their recent presentations around New York. I think they’re on the right track. In terms of where it all be in 5 or 10 years, well… we can speculate but this is a very rich technical area that can go in many directions. I do think it’s here to stay though and that we’ll find more and more useful applications for it. Someday – my speculation is – we won’t even think of CEP as a separate thing. It will just be standard functional part of many different applications and tools.
