Coral8, now at SAP

May 13th, 2010

SAP acquires Sybase

Given that big companies buy other big companies left and right, this might not even be big news even if it is a big deal. For us event processing aficionados this now means that SAP owns Coral8 and Aleri code base. I would be surprised if this is not the end of those products as standalone CEP products…

    These two engines died a horrible death.
    I used to be fan of Coral8 and still think it to be the best but …..
    Streambase is the engine I hate more than anything else.
    After everyone is gone, I thought Streambase would be signing a new deal every morning!! obviously that is not the case.
    I wonder if the CEP party is over.
    By the way, what is the secret that ruleCore did not get acquired till today? Just curious.

    @Elhabib
    Why did you hate StreamBase, is it that bad? How much have you used it?

    As of why ruleCore have not been acquired. don’t know… Maybe because we are located in the cold, dark north part of Europe and all business transactions requires that you get to know each other personally and I suppose it is just too much work to travel here in order to do that. Or maybe perhaps because we have not rigged the company to be acquired so it might not look interesting to these VC guys? don’t know how the arguments goes before they buy companies so I really don’t know. Well, come to think of it, the main reason might be that ruleCore is not for sale…

    Hate may be extreem. Actually like many others, I felt out of love with Streambase because of their aggressive marketing strategy in the early days. May be till now! I live in Japan where it is part of the culture to be humble and appreciate others.
    That strategy proved working eventually anyway. I still believe Coral8 to be superior to Streambase but they failed to get their message through. Their conservative marketing strategy did not work.
    The ashes of my beloved Coral8 engine are now burried some where under Aleri below Sybase below SAP. Very sad.
    ruleCore is not getting attention because you are keeping very low profile. That doesnt work, you should know that. If you through claims that you are the best and the Ferari of the industry, the guys will come where ever you are.
    Good luck to you and ruleCore team

    Elhabib! How fun to come across posts by you. (How many Elhabibs are in Japan and interested in CEP?) Yes, I am the Dave that you worked with and met on one of your trips to MV.

    Thanks for the kind words about Coral8. I certainly believed the Coral8 engine superior to SB and the Aleri Streaming Platform.

    Fortunately, seeing the writing on the wall (it really was pretty obvious Aleri was not going to make a go of it, for those paying attention), I quit Aleri a few weeks before the Sybase acquisition. Cutting it closer than I expected; we had figured 2-3 months.

    And now it is up one more level on the food chain – to SAP. The Coral8 platform may not be lost though; I had worked with SAP in Palo Alto, and while the deal hit a glitch at the last minute, they were very interested in using us in the product suite. Of course, who knows if the people I was dealing with even know the Coral8->Aleri->Sybase transitions. Maybe I should let them know.

    And I think I have an email address for you still. I will see if it is live and drop you a line. We can catch up.

    @Elhabib

    Hi Elhabib,

    What use cases were you looking at Coral8 and Streambase for CEP in Japan? The standard algo trading?

    Thanks!

    Chris
